Path of Exile 2 Return of the Ancients adds Spirit Walker beast-taming and Martial Artist Hollow Form builds. Patch 0.5 changes how you plan alts.

Patch 0.5 being named Return of the Ancients tells me Grinding Gear isn't just tossing in another league and calling it a day. This is the big Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5 shake-up: Atlas changes, Runes of Aldur, new Ascendancies, and the last major content drop before 1.0, which is still aimed at 2026 after ExileCon in November. If you're already hoarding maps and checking PoE 2 Currency prices between deaths, yeah, this patch is aimed right at you. The short version: endgame is getting rebuilt, not lightly tuned.

What changes in Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5?

I care about the Atlas first, because that's where builds either feel smart or feel like wet cardboard. Patch 0.5 moves old league stuff into fixed spots with quests and bosses, so Breach, Ritual, and Expedition aren't just random chores glued to maps. Breach now has a visible timer that grows when you kill fast, then flips into an enraged payout phase if you keep it alive long enough. Ritual is being tightened around Uniques and Omens, with King of the Mists waiting at the end, which sounds mean in the exact way PoE players pretend to hate.

Runes of Aldur league mechanics and Runic Ward explained

Runes of Aldur is the new league, and it sounds like a crafting gamble with teeth. Ezomyte Remnants pop up in campaign zones and maps, then you pick symbols for set rewards, but each symbol also juices the monster wave tied to it. Pick fire runes, get fire nonsense thrown back at you. Fair trade? Maybe.

Runic Ward is the part I'm watching. It acts like a backup life layer when your normal life drops, but it also fuels Kalguuran skills such as Frostflame Nova. That skill applying burning and frostfire without mana or attribute needs is spicy, especially for weird leveling builds that usually run out of buttons by Act 3. I've burned through enough early monk tests to know “free” skills are never really free, though, so I want the missing numbers before I trust it.

Spirit Walker and Martial Artist Ascendancies sound wild

Spirit Walker is the Huntress option, and it uses Azmerian animal spirits: Stag, Owl, and Bear. Stag stampedes on attacks, Owl hands you feather buffs for projectile speed, and The Natural Order lets you tame beast bosses like Mighty Silverfist or Frozen Talon as long-term allies. That tracks for a class that already wants motion and pressure. If the AI on those pets isn't awful, no shot this doesn't become a popular starter.

Martial Artist is the Monk side of the patch, and it's much stranger. Hollow Techniques let you drop spiritual bells for area damage or make Hollow Form copies that repeat selected skills, which sounds busted if cooldowns don't clamp it hard. Runic Tattoos also let you socket runes into your character instead of your gear. I'm not sold on the balance yet, but as build bait? Absolute menace behavior.

Are Labyrinth trials gone in PoE 2 Patch 0.5?

Yes, Ascendancy points are moving away from the Labyrinth setup. Great Trials in Acts 2, 3, and 4 now hand out the points, with Trial of the Sekhema using an Honour bar that drains when you take damage. Trial of Chaos asks for a Trialmaster token and stacks Tribulations, so you can leave with loot or push for the double-or-nothing play. Also, the build planner importing.build files into the client is a quiet monster feature; if Maxroll and Path of Building support lands cleanly, fewer players will brick their first 40 passives and blame the game.

Some stuff is still foggy. We don't have full stats for the 100-plus new runes, Runic Ward scaling, exact Druid Shaman or Oracle leveling paths, or proof that old Uniques get updated with the newer active-effect design. Alloys, Atlas training with Doryani, and quick market checks will push the grind economy hard, so I'd keep an eye on poe2gold swings once May 2026 testing starts. Patch 0.5 looks huge, but your mileage may vary until the numbers stop hiding.
